Well, let’s start from the very beginning. A team of archaeologists were canvassing the area as a part of their job, when one of them got displaced from the group accidentally. In a bid to make his way back to his team, the seemingly lost archaeologist bumped into something which he had not expected. Further exploration revealed a series of caves, which is today known as the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters. 

The most interesting feature of these rock shelters are that they contain numerous paintings; paintings that date back to the Old Stone Age! These are the paintings that had been made by the ancient man who had roamed this portion of the earth. There are over 400 caves and each of these come with paintings and these paintings show the gradual evolution of man, signifying that this region of the earth had been inhabited for quite a long period of time. 

Scientists have found proof that these paintings were made with charcoal dust often mixed with human saliva. They depict the daily life and occasional celebrations of the ancient man, giving us an idea about what their life was like. It is a wonder how these paintings have survived. Archaeologists believe that since it had the protection of the cave, these paintings have managed to stay on for so long.

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are located in the Raisen district, about half an hour drive away from Bhopal. The cave remains open from 7 in the morning to about 5-6 in the evening and hence if you want you can spend the entire day exploring the wonders that this cave has had in store for so many years.
